      Hi Fella’s,

So, I’m just asking about movement holders, because I’ve used a cup for this first watch, and the movement seems to be moving around quite a bit – I’m sure because I’m a noob.

With a cup type holder, I find that it is kind of precarious from time to time – if I push down on one side of the plate by accident, the inevitable happens, and the movement pops up on the other side :(

I would like to know…if you’re around, Bob – why you prefer cup-type holders “any day of the week,” from your video. Any further insight would be greatly appreciated :)

Or, Guy’s, if you like the vice-type of holder, which one do you like, and why?

      Thanks!

      Best,

      Tim :)

Tim I bought this one and have been pleased with it so far. Did two watches and it set well on the bench pad. It will hold from a wrist watch to a big pocket watch. Got it off ebay as it said it held large watches.

Ah, Tim, it’s a blondes vs brunette question, 😆 It’s really what suits a particular person at a given moment, there are no right nor wrong movement holders, rather personal preference.
Personally, I use a little adjustable alloy holder with brass clamps, sometimes I use a wooden cup style, other times I use a piece of wood I made or I just hold it…
I’ve also used the type that Bernie shows, they also work well as they can hold a cased movement up to size 18.

The cup or stackable type you mention are meant to hold a particular size movement, usually, so are you using the correct size for your watch?

                    Thanks Guys,

Bernie, I’ve seen that one before and like the way they build it/functionality…It’s going on my short list :)

Thanks Chris, I believe I’ve seen the one you use, too. The cup I’m using seems to be the right fit – unless it needs to be below the top lip, in which case I will see if the next larger size would be a better way to go. I’ll check tomorrow after I’ve finished my 24 hr shift :)

                    Best,

                    Tim :)

I don’t even know what to say here Tim except Sorry man!!! :D My fault. You need to turn that movement holder over. I have it that way when filming so that I can tilt the movement towards the camera! :D It’s upside down! Actually I do use it that way at times when I want to tilt the movement a bit but it’s not too stable in that position. There are some shots in the videos where it’s turned over correctly. Wider cup side goes down on the bench top. I thought I mentioned something about that in the videos but possibly not remembering correctly. I made that video 25 years ago and can’t really remember what I said about it.

I have just about every style of movement holder going, they tend to come with job lots of stuff or get given to me. I like whichever holder allows me the best access to the watch I am working on. It is a bit of a luxury to have an assortment but they dont tend to be too expensive so if you buy a few different used ones you can then keep what you like and put the rest back on e-bay. I do seem to use the rings the most, I have the wood ones which are my favourite set and I have some plastic ones.
Another neat idea from Daryn is to use the brightly coloured childrens stacking cups for round clock movement holders, these will hold almost any round clock movements from small timepieces up to french striking movements.
