wont chime or gong

William,
I still cant figure out how to send a picture to the forum. So I’m going to send them to you at your wed site.
I have been adjusting the levers and not having much luck. Now it is running ok,but the chimes want to run to long and the gong is going
off once during the chiming…….do I need to keep trying to adjust the levers ,or have I made a bigger problem?

keep tying to figure out how to get those pics on the forum as it is very helpful for other people who may have the same issues or are trying to follow the discussion…I understand it can be a difficult task, took me forever to figure it out, but when you finally get it….you willl be the expert…

I was unable to see anything with the photos you sent, the back of the movement doesnt help much and the other pic is really dark.

as important as cleaning a movement is you also have to bush it for proper function, if there is too much wear in certain pivot areas it can cause malfunction. Without doing those things first we are just chasing our tails. William

Hi,
Yes the clock has been cleaned and inspected for problems.
I just seem to keep having problems with the chime and gong. Now the chime is running to long and it is gonging once during the chime,
I hope I haven’t messed it up to bad,or do I still need to be trying to adjust the chime rods some more?
I am trying to figure out how to send pictures to the forum.

Do you mean the chime and auto correction locking levers/ hooks? possibly… Without having the clock movement in hand it is really difficult to determine what is actually happening. There are many things that have to be just right in order for things to function properly. You need to carefully watch what is happening when certain levers are being lifted, pins that are being captured, what happens when the movement chimes and strikes. There are several books out there that go into detail about the rack and snail chime clock but I cannot remember the names of them right now, maybe someone has one that they would recommend for your type of movement. It would be a good investment. These can be complicated and frustrating when you are unfamiliar with them (I remember all the hours I put in when I first dealt with one of these) by practicing and studying it will soon become clear.
If you have disassembled, cleaned and bushed the movement it is possible the chime locking pin is in the wrong location, possibly the locking levers / hooks are too high, the locking cam and or the control cam is off….more coffee please….possibly a loose pin, bent lever ect….To kindly help I would ask that you investigate the function of these movements, while studying to see what is happening and explaining what your seeing happen, we can give better advice on that. have fun with it, William

I had forgotten about those books by Conover. Jim makes a good suggestion for checking them out. His books are excellent and well written. I have about 6 of his books and use them as references a lot.
