I know I said I was going to start with a movement without a mainspring but I just couldn’t wait to try my new mainspring winder. This was actually my first endeavor all around, a 400 Day Kundo miniature. I took it ALL apart and cleaned it following along with the videos. I have it back together and it has been running now for 4 hours. I’m thrilled! My only reservation is that I neglected to lubricate the inside of the barrel. I used Slick50 on the mainspring but didn’t realize I should have added some to the inside of the barrel and the lid until I had it all back together. Since it is running, should I leave well enough alone or should I take it apart again?

There is also a wealth of information in various books and videos, particularly on Youtube. The WATCH REPAIR CHANNEL alone has a large number of videos that are extremely informative and helpful. Learn all you can from every source you can find.

Additionally, our buddy BS (bunnspecial) has a great YouTube series employing negative reinforcement learning.
He’s a hoot.

TomMarch 18, 2015 at 6:44 am #62188I wouldn’t worry about it at this time. Just put that in your memory bank. It will likely have enough oil on the spring to get the inside enough oil. Doesn’t take much. Sounds like you did well.
March 18, 2015 at 7:56 am #62189Thanks, Bernie. That’s what I am hoping. It will be at my son’s anyway so if it stops, that’s the first thing I’ll check. Still running! Has only lost about 1 minute in the past 16 hours!

March 19, 2015 at 3:59 pm #62190As Bernie says, as long as the mainspring is lubricated it will transfer to the barrel walls so you should be fine and from what I have heard that slick 50 is great stuff for mainsprings, I am just gutted I can’t get it here.

March 20, 2015 at 9:57 am #62192Bunn Special on Youtube is a lot better than he is given credit for. I have read a lot of negative comments on the remark section under his videos but all he is really doing is documenting the mistakes that all of us make in the learning process. To be honest about it I would like to have him join this forum.

davidDavid is right!
This guy can fix just about anything and makes good sketches before hand. Additionally, he always works on great watches. Actually, he is the guy that got me started on this path and I learned which basic tools that I needed with which to get started.
His videos a soooo funny (for reasons that you will quickly see) but he actually winds up fixing his movements often with the wrong or inadequate tools – every time. I guess I like him mostly because he’s a lot like me – warts and all.
