To all of the members in the snow belt… stay warm!
Todays high is -3… and the real cold does not arrive until Feb… Wind chills of -30 to -40..
The good news in there is a tropical warm up this weekend, highs in the lower 20’s!
January 7, 2015 at 12:03 pm #61250Steve, I’m a Canuck, I grew up in the snow belt in Northern Alberta. I also worked in the Yukon for a while, so I feel your pain buddy
Good news is, when I lived in California and Nevada, I was still bloody cold in those mild winters. Now in Southern Spain, at 18c I’m complaining that it’s cold and in summer that it’s too hot. So there is no escape as we become climatized no matter where we are.
I don’t know how I survived those winter snowmobile bush parties in -35c or how I went boarding, skiing, or even to work because now I’m a wimp 😆January 7, 2015 at 12:38 pm #61251Yeah, same here, while I am quite a bit south of Canada, central Iowa, I am the same, we hit 100+ in the summer with 90% humidity, then in winter like this storm, we hit those ungodly temps below zero with wind.
Having lived in Puerto Rico, San Diego, and Iowa, those regional temp. extremes seemed unbareable at the time.
But then again here, when it hits 32 after a month of temps like today, you walk outside in a tee shirt and say how warm it is!
January 7, 2015 at 12:48 pm #61252Thanks Steve for the warm regards….Iowa? I have heard of that place, me, I live in southern Minnesota, -6 for a high today. 20s?????? not for a couple of weeks I think…..I have been huddled in the corner shivering 😯 .I guess its supposed to build character 🙄 …… . William
January 7, 2015 at 1:08 pm #61253My old grand pappy used to say…. ain’t no reason for a man to be a shiverin in the corner like a dawg when there’s a hard days work to be a doin
January 7, 2015 at 1:23 pm #61254I know, it’s been really nippy here in Honolulu at a bitterly cold 58 degrees…you should see all the long pants and sweatshirts go on.
I was in Galena, AK, Chris, along the banks of the Yukon River for a year back when I joined the Air Force in 1988. We had one day that was an ambient -88 degrees F. With even a 1 mph wind chill, it would’ve felt more like – 100 below.
For fun, we used to boil water and throw it out the door, watching the air sear it – and not a drop hitting the ground. Completely vaporized. So, I know what ya’s all mean, though I am in a little better place…

January 7, 2015 at 1:31 pm #61255Will, the only good thing I can say about today… I am glad I put in a new furnace 2 yrs ago.. while it is still running a lot, at least it is doing so efficiently!
Hmm southern Minnesota.. used to hang out in Fairmount as a teenager, a quick drive up from where I spent a coupe of years, and I am in Rochester quite a bit since 2000 when they found my brain tumor.. Dam glad they are smart up there, that skywalk/subwalk system is great in the winter days.. go from my hotel room to the Mayo Clinic and never step outside!
January 7, 2015 at 3:17 pm #61256Steve, I grew up, well depends on if you ask my wife or not, in Rochester, way back when I as a laborer I was involved with many of the buildings for the clinic, I did alot of the work remodeling the subway system. Sorry to hear about your health, I will say a prayer for you and your family. Hope things are going well, If your coming this way give a shout. William
February 2, 2015 at 9:45 am #61257Everyone get dug out from this last round of mother natures fury? Saturday, it was in the high 40’s, by that night snowing and blowing, we got a total of 13 inches here, and thanks to the city snow plows, it was over 4 ft deep to get out of the driveway.. thank god I have a 29 yr old son, he got one of the John Deere’s out of it’s warm shed and cleared the way…
February 2, 2015 at 12:56 pm #61258Steve, after having served my time in many northern Alberta winters, ill say what used to P me off when my southern buddies would say… Snow, what’s that? Naw, now I shovel away sunshine 😆
February 2, 2015 at 2:41 pm #61259Soooo…. your piling on now? LOL
February 2, 2015 at 8:06 pm #61260We didn’t have much snow here in Kansas but had temps in the single digits with wind chills from -8 to -18. Not pleasant.
