      All:

I want to purchase some spring steel stock in the event that I need to make a replacement – which seems to come up a lot. Does this seem like a good selection of thicknesses and material?

      Thanks!

        Tom,
Go through your supply of broken watches and measure the springs that you have. This will give you an idea of what you will need. Spring steel can be purchased from industrial supply houses and come in sheets and rolls. The actual width will have to be sheered to size. If you pull up one of the old Hamilton/Elgin documentries on Youtube there is a segment on one of them showing how they deburr the rough edges after sheering. Msc offeres a selection but if you hunt around on the internet you can find a less expensive source.

          David:

The two springs that I measured from an Elgin 18S were 0.020 and 0.025 so it looks like that mix of thicknesses will work pretty well for something a little larger and several sizes smaller. However, what about the steel – “Blue Tempered, Polished Finish, AMS 5122, SAE 1095, AISI 1095”? Does that sound about right to you?

          Thanks!
          Tom
