      Jan,
Single point threading throws a lot of stuff on a lathe and the process works better with a larger engine lathe. I have seen threading setups for small lathes but they are rare for a reason. A larger engine lathe does this job better. Central machinery makes a range of inexpensive engine lathes that can do single point threading better than any modified instrument size lathe. Grizzly Tools, Harbor Freight and Enco, to name a few distributers, all carry engine lathes that come set up for this kind of work.

Thanks David for your explanation. The size of threads I needed so far were easy to do with taps and dies on the late with a die holder.

          Jan,
Most commerically made threads for bolts, screws etc. are actually rolled in a thread rolling machine. It is a much faster process than cutting and produces a stronger bolt than cutting into the metal.
