I am new to pocket watches. If I have two Elgin pocket watch movements that are both ¾ plate and similar in age are the parts interchangeable: same size gear train, balance wheel etc.?

If you do an internet search for something like elgin pocket watch serial numbers you should find a site that will allow you to determine the grade or caliber of your movements. Movements of the same grade and grade family are generally interchangeable. However there are exceptions. Another handy resource to determine interchangeability is a bestfit catalogue. Tracking down parts can be part of the fun sometimes.

            Steve,
Also check with suppliers like Otto Frei and Cas Kerr. They still may have a selection of parts left over from the old days.
