If you want to type add a direct link to something you have seen on the internet or ebay it is quite a simple procedure;
1. Go to the page or ebay item you want to share and copy the address bar by left clicking on it so it turns blue, you then right click on it and select “copy”.
2. You come back to the forum and click on “New post” as you would if wanting to write a new post.
3. When you get to the point where you want to add the link you look up above the box where you type in the text you will find a button that says URL. Click this button and it will place this on your text screen “[url][/url]”.
4. It is then just a matter of placing your cursor between the two brackets here , right click and select “paste”.
Try it out
Paul.March 13, 2015 at 3:37 pm #62135Great tip Paul….
Here’s an added tip, if you have a long address, and some of them can be reeeeally long, you can simply use the = sign..
Here is an example…Use the URL tag as usual but now place the equal symbol = after the abbreviation URL of the first tag and then add your address…
making certain that the address is within the bracket..
You can now add a title between the two tags to shorten/describe the link.PLACE TITLE HERE[/url:2vfquvro]
I’ve used the above link and added the title SPOCKS BRAIN

March 18, 2015 at 6:41 am #62137All:
It would also be nice to be able to open the link in a new tab which would save users from having to back navigate. Since we can’t post usable html code into our links, I think it would take some fiddling by the moderators to allow it.
Just a thought…
TomMarch 18, 2015 at 6:47 am #62138I would also like to see the link open in a new window. Sometimes if you have clicked on a link it will lead you to a couple of a other links. Then it is use the back button 3 to 6 times to get back to the page you started from.
March 18, 2015 at 9:47 am #62139There is a tag that can be insert into the opening URL tag, my mind draws a blank right now, but I think it is , I will do some checking,
As a part time webmaster, you never want your people to navigate away from your site, so you code the links to open a new window and still keep the reader on your site also. Although some browser will see it as a POP up and block it.
March 18, 2015 at 11:10 am #62140Hi Guys,
I sure agree with all of you about the inconvenience of having to find your way back after heading off on an embedded link. It is a pain. This is an issue I’ve wrestled with in the past though. The problem with adding a simple tag like Steve suggests is that a target=”_blank” or open=”_blank” tag would need to be placed in each link when a link is included in a post. I’m not sure that this would even work when placed within the phpBB framework. If this option did work it wouldn’t cover the forum globally but would only be applied to the particular page where the link is located. Code can be changed within the forum structure to make the change global but that can and has been problematic. I applied a code change adressing this same issue a couple of years ago and it ended up taking down the site for a couple of days by somehow corrupting the MYSQL database a week or so after the change was made. In phpBB2 opening a new tab or browser was the default but this was done away with in phpBB3 for several reasons. One important reason was to make XHTML 1.0 strict-validation global.
My feeling is that the phpBB bulletin designer guys would have that option in there if it was secure and stable and removed it due to some critical issues. Hopefully when the newer version is released they will have addressed and made available an option to turn the function on with the click of a button. For the time being though I’ve learned my lesson when it comes to messing with their html structure .
Of course until then one option with most browsers is to just right click your mouse button when hovering over the link and click ‘open in new tab’ or ‘open link in new window’ (I just edited this…had put ‘new browser’ instead of ‘new window’). Wording may be different depending on the browser being used.
This advise may be something we can add to Chris post at the top of this general forum. We can change the subject line to “How to Post, Take Photos and Navigate to External and Internal Links”?
Thoughts or Ideas?
Thanks,Bob
March 18, 2015 at 12:12 pm #62141Bob:
Using the target property isn’t working as phpBB treats the URL anchor tag as plain text. That’s why I thought it might be a default setting in the BB. Right clicking and selecting “open in a new tab” seems like a good fix.
Thanks,
TomMarch 19, 2015 at 4:08 pm #62142Tom,
Yeah ok. I tried it too but thought that I may have been doing it wrong. Well you’re definitely the guru since you teach this stuff so if you come up with anything that may work please let me know. I’m not too comfortable making changes that entail for than a yes or no answer or simple multiple choice when it comes to this stuff and know just enough about it to manage to get myself into trouble so please keep that in mind if you come up with something that requires me to make any changes . I’m also hoping for a ‘click it on’ option in the near future. Thanks,
BobMarch 20, 2015 at 2:45 am #62143So Bob, requesting a link that provides us with a nice cold beverage or neck massage, when clicked, is out of the question huh 😆
March 20, 2015 at 12:18 pm #62144If we are putting in requests for links then can I please have a link that catches watch shock setting springs when they fly out of my tweezers
Thanks Bob
Paul.March 20, 2015 at 12:48 pm #62145Wow absolutely Chris and Paul. Those are both excellent ideas!
Tom and Steve, when can you have those mods ready for us?
