      Hello,

I cleaned, reassembled, adjusted and was testing my Hermle 1051-030A movement when I noticed that after a couple of days it was no longer chiming. I found that the minute hand was stalled a quarter after the hour, so I pushed it until entered warning and then a bit more until it started to chime. At that point it continued to run. Again, I noticed that I hadn’t heard it chime so I checked it out and found the minute hand stalled at a quarter to the hour. Again, I moved the minute to warning and then to chime at which point it started chiming and ran until it stalled at a quarter after the hour.

I removed the movement from its case and put it on my stand. I watched the time wheels and see that the third wheel, the one after the one driven by the barrel gear, was rotating even when the minute hand was stalled. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I need to check, what might be wrong? Why would the minute hand stall only at the quarter after and quarter to the hour points?

      Thanks in advance, Jeff

        Morning Jeff,

Yeah I know those intermittent problems can be quite frustrating and difficult to find. When I have encountered a movement stopping after cleaning and repair, first thing I check is power to the escapement wheel. Use a pair of tweezers to gently try to move the wheel back and forth within its teeth on the arm. If there is power at the wheel, there is a problem with the pendulum assy. I would bet though, the wheel will have no power. Follow the wheels back on the time train and see where you have power (resistance to your tweezers) look closely at that part and you will find the defect. Something on that wheel is the problem. Good luck and be persistent. You’ll find it.

        thanks Mike

          Happy Thursday Mike,

I apologize for not responding sooner. Thank you for that suggestion, I’ll check that out. I have been busy with other things and just haven’t gotten around to it. I will post my results.

          Thanks, Jeff
