i’m real new at this this may be a dumb question. I have a small clock of a customer and the hair spring is all messed up. I am having a problem fixing the new spring on the shaft I’ve tried a pliers the base continues to roll. most topics I see about hair springs talk about watches. I know alarm clocks do mention them but that’s about it. thank you

        Welcome to the forum Tmess!!!
If I’m understanding correctly the hairspring collet has become loose on the balance staff seat?
If so there are techniques that you can use to close a hairspring collet a little to add friction between the collet id and the balance staff. One way is to use a concave punch or stump on a staking set to close the split collet a bit. Lacking a staking set this can still be achieved by using a concave punch on a steel or brass block.
