I’m just trying to modify my little pivot machine to accept regular pivot drill shanks, so I have to enlarge the tiny hole in the end of the pusher, which is hardened steel.
It’s an odd shape to secure as it has a brass knob fixed to the end, so a collet was a no go.. so I had an idea to try and use the 3 jaw chuck from the marshall lathe, then hold it in the larger chuck.. The small chuck allowed the jaws to tighten on the shaft and clear the knob 💡It’s nice and straight, my carbide drill is in place and all looks good, well, doesn’t it always, until we start drilling
So tomorrow I’ll give her a shot, too late now.. keep your fingers crossed for a successful mission

January 24, 2015 at 8:42 pm #61514Looks to me like ya gotter whipped Chris. Be waiting to see how it turns out. My grandpa always told me where there is a will there is a way and there is more than one way to skin a stripped cat. 😆
January 25, 2015 at 2:42 am #61515Very true Bernie my brother, but I only have one 0.75 carbide drill bit 🙄 hopefully it won’t follow the other several in the broken carbide bit corpse box 😆
Nothing spoils my day worse than spending an hour setting up only to achieve 3 seconds of glory before it snaps….
Possibly after a few coffees and breakfast ill be psyched up..January 26, 2015 at 6:29 am #61516😆 Yep know the feeling. I hate that sound when they break. That’s when I get up go to the house, get a cup of coffee and cool off.
January 26, 2015 at 9:18 am #61517Well, it turned out well..
One of the reasons that I wanted to try this small piece in the larger lathe was to check the accuracy. So with the 0.75mm drill chucked in the tailstock, and with the double chuck setup, the accuracy was right on, so possibly the German refinishing of the Chinese built machine is more than simply resting on the laurels of the German engineering rumor of days gone by.
I also had to go one size higher in drill size, unfortunately I didn’t have a 0.80mm carbide bit, so I used a micro drill set that I picked up from the bay, that worked well, I’ll comment on this product in the Product Review thread.
Due to the shank of the drill bit being very tiny, my drill chuck would not close tight on this small a diameter, so I used a mini chuck which I picked up for just this purpose. I’ll also post my review on this..
