Date Change Standards

Good afternoon everyone,

Im servicing a watch and the date doesn’t change at exactly midnight it changes anywhere from 5 min before or after. I did some research and most people are saying that this is standard. I was wondering if this is true or if there is a different standard. its an omega 610 and Ive tried everything in the book to get it to change at exactly midnight. I have turned the dial till the date changes and then I have put the hands on and sometimes is changes at 5 before or 3 before or 3 after or 5 after so there is no consistency with it. Thanks

My guess is that is pretty good for your 610 Chaplin. Not sure though.

Back when I was still doing watches I had one like that. I never could get it exactly at midnight. So I just left it and it changed most times at 5 min after 12. I spent hours trying and just gave up. Told the customer and he was good with it. He said 5 minutes here or there is not going to make any difference as long as it changes every time which it. Saw him at church one Sunday and he said all is good.

The way the date changes varies with the maker and model of the watch. Some makers have a method to hold back the date change mechanism so that it will change very quickly. Those can be set to change at 12:00. On other watches the date change can take much longer and on those it’s harder. I’ve seen some where the date wheel seems to take an hour or so to finish its jump.
