We are replacing the escapement and crutch on a Gilbert Observatory Calendar Regulator. Is there a hit or trick to determine how the crutch contacts the regulator? The old part is missing. Also there is a spring that appears to keep the escapement in place. I suspect it rests on the shaft holding the escapement part. We are looking for conformation on that.

A few pictures would help. It helps us see what you may be talking about. Yes the spring wire does rest on the shaft keeping the crutch/verge in place. The regulator to me is the piece that adjusts the clock to keep the proper time so not sure if you are talking about how the verge/pallets hit the escape wheel or what. Yes the verge has to be properly set on how it hits the escape wheel so the clock is in beat. If not the clock probably won’t run very long. So like I said a picture or two would help.
