I bought another clock at an auction this weekend. My wife is threating to send me to Clocks Anonymous.

It is a Ingraham Gingerbread Clock. It gongs on the hour and half hour, although it gongs 10 minutes late each hour and half hour.

What could be the cause of that?

You might try flipping the minute hand over. If that doesn’t do the trick you will have to adjust the lift lever on the minute arbor. It shouldn’t take much of a adjustment.

You may discover, when reversing the minute hand that it is exactly fifteen minutes (or 90 degrees) off. If it is, don’t adjust the lift lever; just reset the hand 90 degrees on the arbor. After you do that, you will have to realign the hour hand so that it points to the center of an hour when the minute hand is on twelve but it should be a slip fit on the hour pipe.

I think it may have been misunderstood what I meant by flipping the hand 180 deg. What I was saying was if the minute hand is at 12 pull it off the minute arbor and just flip it over then put back on in the same 12 position. I have never in 30 some years have I did this and had it 90 deg off. Maybe a few minutes off then adjust the lift lever on the minute arbor to get it on. Most times I have found someone has fiddled with the lift levers which generally causes these problems. Also have seen where someone has replaced the hands which won’t line up properly exactly on the hour or half hour in which the lift lever will need adjusted slightly. Just my $1.298.

That was what I was talking about when I said that may make it exactly fifteen minutes out of whack. Sometimes those holes are not exactly parallel to the hand centerline. So if it is off ten minutes, and you turn it over, and it is then off fifteen, and you can then shift it ninety degrees to get it right on.
