      Hello all. I’ve been collecting clocks over the years and now live in an area where there’s no one to service them. My goal is to learn all that’s needed to begin taking care of my own clocks first and possibly try to make a few bucks along the way.

      I have a problem child that stops prior to the 5 min warning. Once I move the min have to complete the hour, the clock chimes and continues to run until the next hour 5 min warning point. It always stops prior to the wind up for the hour. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Thank you

        First thing to do is remove the movement from the case, put the minute hand back on and watch what happens as you slowly move it around to the hour. Most common cause is a lever catching or sticking and because it gets jammed the time side cant keep running and stops. It would also be useful to know what type of clock it is and if you can, post up a picture of the front of the movement.

          I agree with Paul. A lot of times it just takes a good cleaning of the unit. Totally disassemble the movement because sometimes when repairs are done the person will oil these trip levers that make the clock strike and chime. After a time the oil gets dirty and can cause the levers to stick which will stop the clock. I never oil anything that doesn’t make a complete revolution. Mainsprings get dirty and will get sticky which robs the clock of power as do dirty pivots. I agree with a picture of the movement would help us to see what you are dealing with.

            Thanks guys. I’ve got to order a stand before I begin the removal process. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
