      This is about how NOT TO DO IT. I wanted to change the crystal in a Waltham S16 that I had previously glued in with UV glue. I didn’t like the way it came out and wanted to redo it. I soaked the bezel with the crystal in it in Denatured Alcohol for about 15 min. Then I filed the end of a small plastic brush handle to a wedge shape and started to slide it around from the spot where there was a space. (Wrong thing to do). I don’t know if I hadn’t left it in the Alcohol long enough or if I should have used a hair dryer to soften up the glue. Anyway, the end result was I chipped the glass ruining it. Could anyone suggest the proper way to remove a mineral crystal that has been glued in with UV glue?

        Hank:

        I use Acetone for that. It seems to do a good job of dessolving the glue.

          Thanks Tom. How long should I let it sit in the Acetone?

            Hank:

            You can just judge it by taking it in and out of the Acetone until the glue disappears. For example, when I use UV glue on a crystal and cure it with the lamp, I take a rag or paper towel, put a little Acetone on it, and wipe around the bezel on the crystal to remove any excess glue. It works pretty quickly. Obviously, if we could get crystals that actually fit we wouldn’t have deal with the issue but that is getting harder and harder to do – plus you never know what you’ll come across out there.

            Interestingly, RedRooster on eBay (UK) carries are nice variety of new mineral crystals. They have an assortment of different sizes and for a small investment, I’ve been able to stock my own replacements crystals.

            If you’re interested, search on eBay using 191427409565 – they have three boxes that will cover just about everything.
