I am looking for some good references on Keininger Movements, my fathers Howard Miller grandfather clock has stopped striking properly, so I image the rack and snail needs some adjustment, and since it has not be serviced in a long time, I will be doing a full service on it. Since this is my first such movement, I am looking for service manuals, or tech books on it.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated
Steve

I am guessing your clock needs a good overhaul and very seldom do I ever see these movements need adjustments. If it has not been cleaned and oiled in many years I am guessing there may be some bushings needed rather than adjustments.
August 8, 2015 at 8:58 am #63070well, it has not been serviced since he bought it new, which would of been 10-12 yrs ago, the problem when it strikes, it only strikes to 5, regardless of the time, a 1, it strikes properly, at 5 it strikes properly, at 6 it only strikes 5 times, the same until it gets back to 1, that is why I was thinking the rack and snail needs some attention.
The clock has not been adjusted since he bought it, and it still keeps time, so this would be it’s first service.
August 11, 2015 at 6:38 am #63071The first thing I would do would be to take it out of the case and put it on a test stand. I would watch it for a while (several chiming sequences) before I would tear it down to see what it is doing. It may be just the fact that the rack is dirty and not dropping all the way down. I have seen a lot of repairman that set these up will oil those levers e front of clocks. Once I clean them any lever on the clock that does not make a complete revolution does not get oil. If you oil like the rack I have found after a little while they will gum up and won’t work/drop properly. So as I said any of the warning levers, rack, snail, etc do not get oil at all. I do not oil the hammers or shaft the hammers mount on in the chime assembly. Only the tails and the pins that lift the hammers get a coating of grease. The only thing that gets oil is the arbors of the wheels. Hope this makes sense.
August 11, 2015 at 10:05 pm #63072Yeah, it makes sense, to be honest, I have been putting off clocks for awhile, and I am in no hurry to tackle the two clocks I have in my shop, nor the grandfather clock. I have stopped working on clocks because of health issues, I might pull it and check the rack and snail to see what the issue is there, and then fix that, with the intentions of doing the overhaul when things are better.
As always Bernie, thank you for sharing your knowledge, it is appreciated greatly
