I just encountered my first sligh grandfather clock and I am stumped. On all clocks with a Westminster chime I always adjust the first quarter hour with the four descending notes of the barrel and I find all other tunes work fine. However there is no place on this barrel that I get 4 descending notes. To further complicate the matter, when I fit four notes together nicely in the first quarter position, the next quarters that I customarily get 8, 12, and 16 notes I get short space to fit such notes even without 4 descending note.. To make matters more confusing after what I am calling the Westminster arrangement is done the next hour goes into what must be the 4/4 as each quarter is designated with 2 note though the barrel setting is unchanged. This clock 5 positions: silent, 4/4, Beth 5th, maria, west. I appreciate your help.

I’ve had similar trouble too….For me, I have found that if the clock has Whittington, setting 8 notes descending for first quarter hour is way easier. If it only has Westminster, your kinda stuck with that. I have also noticed that Westminster tunes seem to vary.

For example, here is the one you speak of:

Then there is this one, the first four notes played are the quarter hour:

I am sure there are others.

        NOTE: I just re-read the post and this clock does not have Whittington…DANGIT!! ARGH…. I need to R E A D more carefully….

Hey Junior, may first thought is whether the “barrel” (cant think of the technical name) is in the right position with the pins or teeth centered on the hammer. Sounds like I set it up similar to what you guys are doing, like Jim says using the whittington or any other multi striking tune other than the westminster will give a finer adjustment. alot of time I will have the westminster run o.k. but on the whittington it wont drop the hammer on the last note so there needs to be a slight adjustment. If we have not addressed your question it may help to post a photo. William

I uploaded 2 pics of opposite sides of my barrel on my sligh movement. Again I don’t know how to deal with the empty space on the barrel. There is no place that has a consecutive descending order of notes not even on the Westminister. As digitaltripper indecated even the Westminister has no descending pattern. I double checked the pin allignment and it looks good.

Hey Junior, cant really see anything in your photos, please have a look at “how to post photos” at the top of the general discussion forum. As far as the 4 descending notes, is it possible a pin is missing or broken off? just a guess. I will try to resize your photo but if you would try and put up a better picture at the same time hopefully we can get it figured out. William

I can’t tell much from your pictures. Make sure your chime drum pins are centered on the hammer wing or make sure you don’t have a pin broke. A clearer picture at different angles would help.
