I have not had the good fortune of having to replace one, cant say for sure how they are secured but it looks like it is possible they are set in the tube then rubbed over to hold in place, can you tell on yours with the jewel out? I have also heard of them being shellacked, the ones I have do not appear that way, maybe it was the older ones. email me if you want this one. William
