I used a wire dremmel brush for the initial clean, followed by a 1000 grit cloth, followed by a brass wire brush, followed by 2000 grit cloth.
Once I was happy with the finish, I used my hard leather polishing wheel to smooth it up.
I tried the bronze bearing inside and it rotated smoothly and silently. Before the treatment I could feel the roughness.
I applied a small amount of oil inside for protection until assembly time.
